2013 Handy Festival LogoThe WC Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival is a huge annual event held in Henderson, Kentucky. The festival holds a special place in my heart, because when I founded this radio show, the organizers of the Handy Fest were very encouraging of my efforts to keep the Blues alive. They even asked me to emcee the event a couple years ago. The WC Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival is one of the best organized events held each year, and draws fans from across the globe. Artists speak highly of the crew, the fans, and constantly ask to come back and play on a regular basis.

With all of that said, this week’s episode of Full-Time Blues Radio takes a look at the 2013 edition of the festival by playing music from nearly all of the bands set to perform. Another reason that this festival means so much to me is that they understand the importance of supporting new and independent Blues artists and bands. You’ll see local and regional acts on the same stage with up-and-coming stars from other areas, as well as the established hit-makers of today, and legendary names in the genre.

The Blues Foundation held their huge annual Blues Music Awards in Memphis, Tennessee, and member voting revealed a great list of worthy winners at this year’s event. As always, there were live performances that couldn’t be seen anywhere else. The entire event was broadcast live on Sirius-XM Radio’s B.B. King’s Bluesville channel. Check out the complete list below and Don’t Miss Episode 1318 of Full-Time Blues Radio, when we’ll play music from the winners!

Big winners at this year’s event included Tedeschi Trucks Band, who took home three trophies, including the Gibson Guitar Award for best guitar player, which went to Derek Trucks. The late Michael Burks led the way for posthumous honors, winning both Album of the Year and Contemporary Blues Album of the Year.

But, Curtis Salgado was the night’s biggest honoree. Salgado, who has been battling cancer for some time now, and actually had to come off the road for a bit, won the night’s biggest proze – B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, as well as Soul Blues Male Artist and Soul Blues Album of the Year!

Willie Nelson transcends musical genres more than any other artist in history. In addition to being one of the greatest Country music artists of all time, Willie has recorded albums of American Standards, Reggae, and especially Blues!

He’s collaborated with men like B.B. King, Ray Charles, and others; performed live with Eric Clapton, Ben Harper, and countless more; and he’s been covered by acts that include, but certainly aren’t limited to: Aretha Franklin, Jimmie Vaughan, and The Spinners.

Willie Nelson turned 80-years-old on April 30, 2013. In honor of the milestone, Full-Time Blues Radio dedicated an entire hour to Willie’s Blues. There’s Blues songs by Willie himself, collaborations with and tributes from Blues artists, and tracks by friends of Willie who share his passion for the Great American Music! It’s an eye-opening hour of Blues from a man you may never have considered for your collection.

Inside “Johnny’s Mailbox,” this week, there’s even a brand new Willie Nelson song – his version of “Matchbox.” That song has a history dating back to the 1920′s. The song “Match Box Blues” was first recorded under that title by Blind Lemon Jefferson. In 1957, Carl Perkins recorded his version of the song for Sun Records. Carl opted to name the track simply “Matchbox,” and interpreted it in his own unique way, due to the simple fact that he did not know all of the lyrics to Jefferson’s original. Willie’s “Matchbox” is in the vein of Carl’s version, but maintains that link to the forefathers of Blues music. The song is available on Willie’s brand new album Let’s Face The Music And Dance, which is available now on Legacy Recordings.

The track comes from the brand new album This River, which has been released on Alligator Records. On April 6, 2013, Full-Time Blues Radio will be in attendance at the First Annual Parkinson’s Smoke-Out and Blues & BBQ Festival to benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Please look through this article to get some of the facts, as well as find more information this event!

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects one in 100 people over age 60. While the average age at onset is 60, some people are diagnosed at 40 or younger. – Michael J. Fox Foundation

There are an estimated one million individuals living with Parkinson’s in the United States; and while the disease itself is not fatal, it completely changes the lives of those individuals who have it and their families – and it has caused incidents that have resulted in death. There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but it can be treated. There are several organizations fighting for a cure to Parkinson’s, and perhaps the most well known is the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Organizers of the First Annual Parkinson’s Smoke-Out are holding the event at Evansville, Indiana’s Casino Aztar Pavilion on April 5 & 6, 2013. The event will feature 50 teams competing in a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned competition, as well as fundraisers such as a silent auction and more.
There’s also the music! The River Basin Blues Society, based in Evansville, has helped to put together a great lineup of amazing talent to perform for the event – including The Beat Daddys, The Boscoe France Band, and Redd Velvet. Johnny Full-Time, host of Full-Time Blues Radio, will emcee the event April 6th.
