This week, Full-Time Blues Radio brings you a focused examination of Next-Gen Blues. What is Next-Gen Blues? It’s a purely subjective term I’m using to describe the incredibly talented stars on this playlist who are all 30-years-old or under. – Johnny Full-Time
Each generation seemingly has a select number of young people who bring a new energy to the Blues that recharges it for another couple decades. The 90’s saw Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepherd break. The resurgence of Blues music in the 80’s due to the mainstream popularity of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robert Cray was one of the most notable instances in recent memory. Then, there are the British Blues stars of the 60’s who infused Rock into their Blues and seemingly created a brand new subgenre.
Today, fans of the Great American Music find themselves standing at the edge of something truly amazing. There are more young artists than ever who have a depth to their music. It’s not just cookie cutter 12-year-old Blues-Rock guitar phenoms who are blinding festival crowds with their playing. These are young men and women who are well-rounded artists, equally skilled at playing, singing, composing and writing; and they have a passion for the Blues that rivals any elder statesmen.
With Joe Bonamassa (37) touring arenas, and Lang (33) and Shepherd (37) playing large venues, as well, folks are now flocking to clubs to stand in awe of names like Alligator Records labelmates Jarekus Singleton (30) and Selwyn Birchwood (29), as well as Marquise Knox (23), and Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton (25), among scores more. Heck, a majority of the Ruf Records stable is under the age of 30, as well! Then you have stars who narrowly missed the 30-year-old cut, like Brandon Santini and Bart Walker (both 32).
Enjoy the bright future that Blues music has before it by listening to this week’s edition of Full-Time Blues Radio. This week’s playlist is packed to the brim with amazing Next-Gen Blues. The only regret being there are far too many amazing talents to fit into one hour of radio. The featured selection from inside “Johnny’s Mailbox” is the track “Who Will.” The song comes from the upcoming debut CD by the Chase Walker Band, which is titled Unleashed. The Chase Walker Band is a teenaged power trio based out of California. The guys have wowed huge crowds at both the International Blues Challenge and the Vans Warped Tour. They are quickly building a following around the world, and draw on influences they list including Warren Haynes, Tab Benoit and Amos Lee.
