Listen: Favorite Albums of 2014 (Episode 1447)

As mentioned at the beginning of the show, this week, it’s a pretty gutsy thing to craft a list of albums and say they’re “the best.” Yet, every December, countless media outlets try to hammer you with their opinions of the best releases from the last 12 months. I don’t think art can be judged that way, so this week’s playlist features music from my favorite albums of 2014. – Johnny Full-Time

The show features a wide selection of Blues styles, and some truly independent releases alongside some big name artists like Gary Clark, Jr., Paul Thorn, and Janiva Magness, to name a few. There’s no featured selection from inside “Johnny’s Mailbox,” this week. However, several of these albums were featured throughout the year.

My absolute favorite album of 2014, although close to call, is In The Magic Shop, the posthumous release from Sean Costello by the Vizz-Tone Label Group. This episode closes with an incredible cover by Sean of Rod Stewart’s “You Wear It Well.” Don’t Miss It!

Remember, 100% of the proceeds made from the sale of this album benefit the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bipolar Research. You can find complete information on their official website:

This week’s show is stuffed with some incredible new Blues tunes. The fall 2014 releases continue to roll in, and we’re spreading the love over the course of a few shows. That way, we can work in some older releases that have flown under the radar. Don’t worry, though. These “older releases” came out in 2014, as well, except for two 2013 CDs. The featured selection from inside “Johnny’s Mailbox” is “I Went Wrong” by Sean Costello. It comes off the brand new record, In The Magic Shop, which is available now from the Vizz-Tone Label Group. Sean passed away, tragically, back in 2008. This album was recorded in 2005, and the people close to Sean left it unreleased as they dealt with his loss and shaped these sessions into the album he envisioned.

It is an amazing record, with a great mix of original, personal songwriting and well chosen covers. It will be regarded as one of the best records to come out in 2014. Perhaps, just as importantly, 100% of the money earned from the sale of In The Magic Shop goes to directly support the Sean Costello Memorial Fund for Bi-Polar Research. This organization was founded by Sean’s mother after his passing to selflessly fight against Bi-Polar Disorder. Please consider purchasing this album, and Click Here to Visit

Janiva Magness is a multi-time Blues Music Award winner, a BB King Entertainer of the Year, and has solidified herself as both a top draw and a fan favorite in the Blues world. She’s also a survivor, a product of the foster care system, and an inspiration to anyone with a dream. She is vividly honest regarding the loss of her parents as a teenager, her movement through the foster care system, and the combination of a love for music and the loving encouragement of an important person that saved her life.

This week, Johnny Full-Time is joined on the telephone by Janiva Magness for conversation and music on Full-Time Blues Radio. Her 11th album, Original, was released in 2014 on her very own label – Fathead Records. She co-wrote seven of the album’s 11 tracks with friend and producer Dave Darling. You’ll hear several songs from this new CD, as well as select songs from past albums, and a song by one of Janiva’s favorite artists. In addition, Janiva and JFT discuss the music business, the leap of faith it took to break out on her own, helping at risk youth, and much more.

Parkinson’s disease is a chronic, degenerative neurological disorder that affects one in 100 people over age 60. While the average age at onset is 60, some people are diagnosed at 40 or younger. – Michael J. Fox Foundation

There are an estimated one million individuals living with Parkinson’s in the United States; and while the disease itself is not fatal, it completely changes the lives of those individuals who have it and their families – and it has caused incidents that have resulted in death. There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but it can be treated. There are several organizations fighting for a cure to Parkinson’s, and perhaps the most well known is the Michael J. Fox Foundation. Organizers of the First Annual Parkinson’s Smoke-Out are holding the event at Evansville, Indiana’s Casino Aztar Pavilion on April 5 & 6, 2013.
