There are three 2016 albums featured in this playlist, along with three 2015 albums that have never been featured on the show. In addition, Johnny Full-Time takes a few moments to honor the late Otis Clay, and we’ll hear a pair of recent releases that feature the late Soul giant.

The featured selection from inside “Johnny’s Mailbox” is a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Freedom.” The song is performed by Italian guitarist and singer Davide Pannozzo, and it appears on his EP 2015. The EP also includes versions of “Feels Like Rain” (famously recorded by Buddy Guy) and Elmore James’ “It Hurts Me Too.”

Davide Pannozzo started playing classical guitar at the age of six, and he has incorporated that immense skill into his rock influenced Blues music, along with his love for guitarists like Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour and others. Make sure to scroll down below this week’s playlist to watch Davide and his band perform another Hendrix cover, “If Six Was Nine.” You can also find complete information about Pannozzo, his music, and more at his official website, DavidePannozzo.com

Thanksgiving Blues 2015 (Episode 1547)

This week brings us the semi-annual Thanksgiving edition of the program, featuring a mouth-watering selection of songs in all flavors of the Blues. It’s an impressive spread of food themed tracks for your holiday season soundtrack, with all but two of the songs coming off 2015 releases – an impressive feat for a themed episode.

We were fortunate to even have a featured selection from “Johnny’s Mailbox” that fits right in with the Thanksgiving topic. “Mama’s Cookin'” comes off the new album by Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans. The new CD, That’s What They Say, is available now from ManHatTone, and it includes 15 songs. You’ll find guests on this disc like Gina Sicilia, Mike Welch, and Dave Gross. As always, Brad Vickers and company create original music and play covers that keep the American Roots music traditions of the past alive.

“Mama’s Cookin'” is a tribute to mothers everywhere who strive to keep our bellies full. It was written by the Vestapolitans’ Margey Peters, and she also takes lead vocals on the tune. Other than the opening cover of Tampa Red’s “Seminole Blues” and the traditional song “Don’t You Love Your Daddy No More,” all of the songs on the record are original compositions. You can learn more about Brad Vickers & His Vestapolitans, That’s What They Say, and the tour schedule online at BradVickers.com

In addition to the music, I found a fascinating short film about the history of poke sallet, or polk salad. This video is courtesy of the Southern Foodways Alliance and Joe York. Enjoy the video, and consider making this southern favorite a part of your spread.

The featured selection from inside “Johnny’s Mailbox” is “Older Fool” by Chris Beard. It comes off his new CD, Eye Of The Witch, and it features Chris joined in studio by his father, Joe Beard. Chris grew up surrounded by the Blues. In the liner notes to this album, Chris’ fifth release, the guitarist, vocalist and songwriter recalls visits to his boyhood home from Buddy Guy and Matt “Guitar” Murphy.

Chris burst onto the scene in the late 1990’s, releasing his debut CD and earning a Best New Artist Debut at the Blues Music Awards (which were called the W.C. Handy Awards at the time.) Chris’ most recent album came in 2010. In between all of that, he suffered a small stroke that drastically altered his approach to guitar playing. Where he once played fast and furious, Beard now slows his playing and gets every ounce of emotion from each note.

Eye Of The Witch is available now digitally on CD Baby and iTunes. You can also pick up a copy directly from Chris at one of his live shows. You can find out more about Chris, his music, and tour schedule on his official website, ChrisBeard1.com
